The story
The Hale, built in 1892-93 to replace an earlier bathhouse, is the oldest surviving building on Bathhouse Row and was the first bathhouse with modern conveniences. A later remodel gave it arched windows, iron grills and a wide-eaved red tile roof. It stopped bathing operations in 1978, and a 1981 theater conversion lasted nine months. Today it is a nine-suite hotel whose soaking tubs are piped with hot spring mineral water.
