The story
Named for lumber baron David Whitney Jr., the office tower on Grand Circus Park was completed in 1915 and was long home to doctors and dentists. The 1983 district nomination credits Daniel Burnham, but Wikipedia notes Burnham died in 1912 and the design came from his successor firm, Graham, Burnham & Co. A 1959 modernization stripped its cornices. A $92 million renovation completed in December 2014 put a hotel on floors three to nine with apartments above; the hotel was later rebranded into Marriott’s Autograph Collection.
