The story
A lodging house has stood on this Public Square site since Mowrey’s Tavern opened in 1815. The 1,000-room Hotel Cleveland opened in December 1918, and the Van Sweringen brothers built the Union Terminal complex around it. Eliot Ness questioned a Torso Murders suspect in one of its rooms in 1938, and the Beatles stayed in 1964 when it was the Sheraton-Cleveland. After a $90 million restoration it reopened in 2024 as Hotel Cleveland in Marriott’s Autograph Collection, with 491 rooms.
The ghost story
Cleveland Scene, writing when the hotel was the Renaissance Cleveland, reported that staff consider the fourth floor particularly haunted, with lights flickering, toilets flushing and faucets turning on and off by themselves. An earlier Scene piece ties the lore to the site's history as Cleveland's first hotel, Mowrey's Tavern of 1815.
