The story
Wally Hickel, who was later governor of Alaska and U.S. Interior Secretary, built the hotel after the 1964 Alaska earthquake, and it opened in 1965. It grew with two later towers. The hotel’s private art collection tells the story of Captain James Cook, who mapped this coast in the 18th century. It is the only Alaska member of Historic Hotels of America.
