The story
German immigrant Peter Mayerhofer built the Grand Horton in 1886, modeled on the Innsbruck Hotel in Austria, and Wyatt Earp is said by the hotel to have lived there for seven years. Both it and the 1887 Brooklyn Hotel were slated for demolition for the Horton Plaza mall, until developer Dan Pearson had them taken apart piece by piece (more than 40 tons of materials and 82,000 bricks) and rebuilt side by side. The $12 million project reopened in 1986, the hundredth anniversary of the Grand Horton. The hotel calls the result a re-creation rather than a strict restoration.
