The story
Stephen and Clara Smith built the Golden Gate Saloon in 1852, which OHP calls the oldest continuously operating saloon in the Mother Lode. Fires in 1855 and 1862 led to the present two-story fieldstone and brick hotel, fireproofed with iron doors and a roof of earth and brick. Ellen and Daniel Holbrooke bought it in 1879 and gave it their name, and Ellen ran it until 1908.
The ghost story
The hotel's own story says it is 'haunted by rough cowboys and Victorian Madames'. It is told as house lore.
