The story

R. Spencer Hines (1848-1898) and his wife Kitty built the pressed-brick Victorian house in 1895 with money from mining, business and real-estate ventures, as a showplace during Provo’s recovery from a boom-and-bust period. Kitty moved out in 1906 and rented it to tenants, among them saloonkeeper and miner Bert Bowen. The Utah Heritage Foundation gave the restored mansion its Award of Merit in 1976, and it was listed on the National Register in 1978. It now runs as an inn of themed suites, each with a two-person jetted tub.
