The story
New York architect Stephen D. Hatch, with associate L. Cass Miller, designed the Merchants-Laclede Building, finished in 1888 with granite lower floors and red sandstone and brick above. It housed banks and brokerages, later Ozark Airlines and law firms, and stood vacant in the 1990s. It was converted to a hotel in the 2000s; the lobby keeps the original white marble floors and twin bank vault doors.
