The story

Joseph Halleck built the inn in 1880 as Highlands House, the town’s first hotel. Eliza Wheaton sold it in 1890 to her niece Mary Chapin Smith, who renamed it Highlands Inn. The original three-story central block survives with additions around 1900 and 1950.
