The story
Col. Ebenezer Brewster built the first tavern on the corner around 1780, and it stayed in private hands until fire swept the block on January 4, 1887. Dartmouth bought the corner in 1888 and built a brick Victorian hotel, renamed the Hanover Inn after a 1901-03 reconstruction. In 1924 the college added a major east wing, and it later replaced the 1888 section with a building designed to match it. The college-owned inn has 108 rooms facing the Dartmouth Green.
