The story
Gold and Company began planning a new store in 1923, Lincoln’s Davis & Wilson designed it, and the six-story section began in spring 1924 and opened that November. Additions followed in 1929, 1947 and 1951. Gold’s merged with J. L. Brandeis and Sons in 1964 and kept its name, and Brandeis closed here in 1980. Developer Mike Works bought the largely uninhabitable building in 2021 and demolished the south side. It reopened in October 2025 as a Hampton Inn that keeps the brick walls, concrete columns and 14-foot ceilings.
