The story
D. A. Bohlen and Son designed the nine-story office building in 1929–30 for the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway, the ‘Big Four’, which was headquartered at 105 South Meridian Street; Alexander Sangernebo was its architectural sculptor. Stone-clad lower floors and fluted terra-cotta detailing above the ninth floor show the Art Deco influence noted in the 1982 nomination, when the building housed Amax Coal Company. It was converted into a Hampton Inn in 1996.
