The story
John and Helen Murphey opened Hacienda del Sol in 1929 as a ranch school for girls from families such as the Vanderbilts and Westinghouses. After a 1938 fire, much of the campus was rebuilt to Josias Joesler’s designs. The school closed in 1942, and new owners opened the Hacienda del Sol Ranch Hotel by December 1945, turning the students’ rooms into guest quarters. Duel in the Sun was filmed there in 1946, and guests included Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn and Clark Gable.
