The story
Henry D. Gruene, son of German immigrants and born in New Braunfels in 1850, built the house in 1872 in what was then the town of Goodwin. He became a community leader, and the town was later renamed for him. Gruene declined after his death in 1920 and is now part of New Braunfels. The mansion, with elaborate Eastlake detailing, stands next to Gruene Hall, which the inn calls Texas’s oldest dance hall.
