The story

The Enfield Shakers’ Church Family raised the granite Great Stone Dwelling in 1837; at 100 by 58 feet and 62 feet to the peak, it is the largest Shaker dwelling ever built and was probably the largest stone building north of Boston in its day. The nomination suggests it may have been designed by Ammi Burnham Young. The upper floors keep much of the original Shaker cabinetwork. Today the museum rents twenty guest rooms on its third and fourth floors year-round.
