The story
Bowman and Nathalie Lyons Gray bought 87 acres from R. J. Reynolds interests in 1925 and hired the young architect Luther Lashmit. When construction ended in 1932 the 46,000-square-foot Norman Revival house was among the largest private homes in North Carolina. The family gave the estate to Wake Forest University in 1946, and it now operates as a hotel and conference center.
