The story

A.B. Harlan and George Bane opened the Colonial Apartments and Hotel in 1913. Bane later commissioned architect Frank Stevenson to build a hotel to ‘rival anything in the West’, moving the original building to the rear of the lot. After World War II, actors performing at the La Jolla Playhouse, among them Charlton Heston, Groucho Marx and David Niven, stayed at the Colonial. An $8 million project restored two adjacent historic buildings, the Little Hotel by the Sea and the Garden Terraces, into 18 suites.

The ghost story

The hotel reports that generations of guests and staff describe unexplained happenings, including front-desk calls at 2 a.m. coming from rooms known to be empty. It is told as hotel lore.
