The story
Minneapolis developer M.V. Baker bought the Gull Lake property in 1916 to sell lakeshore lots and housed prospective buyers in an old log lodge; demand led him to build the larger Main Lodge from red pine cut on the site. In 1937 Baker sold the resort to Reynolds ‘Brownie’ Cote and his wife, whose family still runs it. The 1980 nomination calls its buildings among the most elaborate rustic log architecture in north-central Minnesota; the Main Lodge has sleeping rooms on its upper floor.
