The story
William DeWoody’s tavern stood on the site from the 1790s; as the Lane House during the Civil War it was near where Confederate Gen. John Hunt Morgan was shot and killed on September 4, 1864. Col. John H. Doughty demolished the old tavern and built the four-story brick Grand Central Hotel in 1884 for the railroad trade, and it became one of several Greeneville railroad hotels linked by a second-floor bridge. Mrs. E. J. Brumley bought it in 1920 as the Hotel Brumley, and Judd Brumley’s General Morgan Room supper club opened in 1948. The hotel closed in May 1981 and, after nine years of planning and fundraising, reopened restored in September 1996.
