The story
Fort Worden was built as a coastal artillery post guarding the entrance to Puget Sound, with most of its permanent buildings, including the officers’ quarters facing the parade ground, erected in 1904-05. It was declared surplus in 1953 and acquired by the State, later becoming a state park. Washington State Parks rents the historic Officers’ Row and NCO Row houses as furnished vacation homes and took back direct management of the lodging in 2026 after the previous operator ceased operations.
