The story
Congress authorized the fort in 1903 and the Army built its original post between 1906 and 1910 from Quartermaster General’s stock plans. According to the park’s interpretive naturalist, the inn’s main lodge served as the post hospital when the fort opened in 1906; by 1995 it housed the Soldier Support Center headquarters. After the Army closed the fort, the State of Indiana acquired the historic buildings and surrounding land in 1995 for Fort Harrison State Park. The inn now rents rooms in the main lodge, the Harrison House and former officers’ homes beside the Fort golf course.
