The story
Chocolatier Domingo Ghirardelli’s company took over the Pioneer Woolen Mill block in 1893, and the family hired William S. Mooser to adapt the buildings for chocolate making. When the company moved to San Leandro in the 1960s, William Roth and his mother bought the complex to save it from apartment development and had Wurster, Bernardi & Emmons and Lawrence Halprin turn it into Ghirardelli Square. Fairmont Heritage Place now offers suites within the historic complex.
