The story
Long Beach banker Fred B. Dunn raised about $3 million to build The Breakers, which opened in 1926 with designs by Walker & Eisen, who had just finished the Hotel Normandie in Los Angeles. Conrad Hilton bought it and renovated it in 1938, creating the Art Deco Sky Room; HHA lists Clark Gable, Rita Hayworth and Cary Grant among the hotel’s guests. The hotel closed in the early 1960s; Long Beach-based Pacific6 bought the building in 2017 and restored it to reopen as Fairmont Breakers.
