The story
The Gale family, Cyrus and Marcia (Pinkham) Gale, ran the original Eagle Mountain House as a farmhouse inn that grew to hold about 125 guests before it burned in 1915. Their son Arthur Pinkham Gale drew preliminary plans for the replacement, which opened on July 4, 1916, with 75 guest rooms, most with private baths. A 1929 addition doubled its size, and its hydro-electric elevator dates from 1926. It stayed in the Gale family until 1973 and keeps a 220-foot front porch and a 9-hole golf course.
