The story
Alamo National Bank commissioned the tower just before the 1929 stock market crash, and it was completed in the early months of the Depression, with terra cotta and bronze detailing by Chicago’s Graham, Anderson, Probst & White. The building rests on belled concrete caissons 35 feet below street level. An eight-story parking garage was attached in 1961, and most later changes date to 1972-74 remodeling. The tower was converted to a hotel after its 2006 listing and now operates as the Drury Plaza.
The ghost story
Ghost-tour lore holds that a security guard's ghost still patrols the old Alamo National Bank vault, now a restaurant, that a phantom elevator operator rides the lifts, and that the 13th floor is the building's most active.
