The story
Capt. James Minot built the earliest of the inn’s three buildings in 1716. Before the Revolution the middle building was part of the militia storehouse that British troops marched to seize on April 19, 1775, and Dr. Timothy Minot Jr. treated wounded militiamen in what is now the Liberty Room. John Thoreau, grandfather of Henry David Thoreau, bought the eastern building in 1799, and Henry David Thoreau lived there from 1835 while he attended Harvard.
The ghost story
Room 24, said to have been Dr. Timothy Minot's operating room after the 1775 fight at the North Bridge, is the center of the lore, and guests who sleep there report strange activity. Guests also report an older woman and a tall, slim gentleman in a top hat wandering the halls.
