The story
Jacob R. Blackshere came from Virginia in 1860, built a one-room cabin that now forms the back of the house, and returned with his family in 1867. He raised what the ranch calls the first successful alfalfa crop in Kansas and introduced Galloway cattle to Chase County, and the limestone house was completed in 1883. Homer Prather and his wife bought the ranch in 1912, added plumbing and electricity, built a stone veranda and three more houses, and hosted the poet Vachel Lindsay. James and Joan Donahue bought it in 1987 and restored the house. Warren and Susie Harshman are the current owners.
