The story

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet founded St. Agatha’s Conservatory of Music and Art in 1884; it grew under Mother Celestine Howard, and the sisters built this six-story Beaux-Arts building, finished in 1910 (1909 per the hotel), with classrooms and a chapel below and the sisters’ convent on the upper floors. At its peak the school had 1,100 students; it closed in 1962, and the building later housed offices and the McNally School of Music. Rebound Hospitality bought it in 2017 and opened it as the Celeste, serving breakfast in the former chapel.
