The story
The War Department began building Fort Baker in 1901 to guard the Golden Gate, finishing most of its structures over about nine years around a 10-acre parade ground. Its Colonial Revival officers’ quarters housed soldiers through World War II, and the post was transferred to the National Park Service in 2002. Cavallo Point opened in 2008 through a public-private-nonprofit partnership, with rooms in the restored historic quarters and in new buildings.
