The story

August Zahn came from Germany in 1904 to join his uncle Albert in Baileys Harbor, and the two built a smithy on the property. Starting in 1905 he spent seven years building a replica of his family’s home next door, using stovewood construction whose exposed walls still show in the lobby and guest rooms. His son Walter’s family later rented part of the house to tourists, and after its 1994 sale it became the Blacksmith Inn; the current owners added the Harbor House in 2000.
