The story
Built in 1886 during Ouray’s mining boom, the three-story Second Empire hotel became known as the ‘Flagship of the San Juans’. The hotel lists past guests including Theodore Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, King Leopold of Belgium, Chipeta (widow of Ute leader Ouray) and Sarah Bernhardt. It was painted pink in the 1950s, closed for 36 years from 1967 to 2003, and reopened after a restoration that began in 1998.
