The story
The hotel was built in 1879 as the Summit Hotel, a stop for stagecoach and railroad travelers. Local ranchers began using Main Street as a landing strip in the 1940s. In 1953 rancher James Clinton Squier remodeled the hotel for fly-in guests and added 70 acres for a grass airstrip, and planes still taxi to the door. The Beaumont railroad water tank, also on the National Register, stands nearby.
