The story
The Baranof was dedicated on March 10, 1939, as a six-story hotel, with more than 400 people attending. Records for the Juneau Downtown Historic District describe it as among the first structures in Alaska built entirely of reinforced concrete and the first to use a two-way concrete post-and-beam system. The main floor held a lobby, shops, a coffee shop, a lounge and banquet rooms. Three floors were added in 1970, taking it to nine stories, and the marquee was rebuilt close to its original design in 1985. It was formerly the Westmark Baranof and is now part of Best Western’s BW Signature Collection.
