by 1821The hotel says the cottages were built shortly after the two great fires of the late 18th century (1788 and 1794); no exact date is published. John James Audubon lived in Cottage One in the winter of 1821, so the cottages stood by then.

The story

The hotel says naturalist and painter John James Audubon lived in Cottage One during the winter of 1821 and used Cottage Seven as a studio while working on The Birds of America. Elizabeth Taylor stayed in Cottage Three, by the hotel’s count 27 times. Today the seven one- and two-bedroom cottage suites surround a courtyard with a saltwater pool.

The ghost story

Guests and staff report sightings of a petite woman with long white hair and a soldier softly humming tunes, often in Cottage Four or on the balcony over the pool, according to the hotel.
