The story
The Pantlind Hotel opened in 1913 and reopened in 1916 after a renovation by Warren and Wetmore in the English Adam style; its lobby has one of the largest gold-leaf ceilings in the country (Wikipedia). By 1925 it was ranked among the ten finest hotels in America. Amway bought the faded hotel in 1979 and reopened it as the Amway Grand Plaza on September 15, 1981, with Gerald and Betty Ford presiding; the 29-story Glass Tower followed in 1983.
