The story
Hoteliers Frank Bering and Ernie Byfield built the 17-story Ambassador East on the Gold Coast in 1926, on the site of the old Huck Brewing Company; workers cleared old beer tunnels during construction. Byfield already owned the Ambassador West across the street. The hotel describes itself as sometimes called Chicago’s first ’boutique’ hotel, catering to high-society visitors.
