The story
Brown County State Park opened in 1929 and was dedicated in 1932 as a memorial to Indianapolis humorist Kin Hubbard, whose cartoon backwoodsman Abe Martin gives the lodge its name; a portrait of Hubbard hangs in the lodge lounge. The lodge opened in 1932, and Civilian Conservation Corps companies arrived in 1934 to build much of the park’s infrastructure, the basis of its 2020 National Register listing. A 54-room east wing added in 1987 reopened in 2021 after a $4.5 million renovation, and the lodge also rents family cabins, cabin suites and seasonal rustic cabins.
