The story
The Fayette National Bank, founded in 1870, tore down its old bank and hired the New York firm McKim, Mead & White to design a skyscraper headquarters near the Fayette County Courthouse. The bank was folded into First National Bank during the Great Depression and the building later stopped serving as a bank. 21c Museum Hotels founders Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson bought it in 2012 and reopened it in 2016 as a hotel and contemporary art museum. The entry of the 1914 bank now holds an immersive installation by the New York studio SOFTlab.
