The story
Merchant Henry S. Rose built a store on the site in 1891, survived the great fire of 1899 and in 1905 enlarged the building to three floors, with two stores at street level and hotel rooms above, recorded on Sanborn maps as the Commercial Hotel (1908) and the Family Hotel (1918). Schofield Brothers Hardware bought it around 1923, and later tenants included Eagle Stores, McCrory McLellan and Rogers Brothers Fabrics. A metal facade covered it from about 1960 until 2011, and the restored building became the main building of Hotel Florence, which joined Hilton’s Tapestry Collection in 2021.
