The story
Plowden Charles Jenrette Weston of Hagley Plantation built the house as a summer retreat; the Westons used it until 1864, when it sold to William St. Julien Mazyck. The Atlantic Coast Lumber Company bought it in 1901 and let employees use it as a vacation home. After a later change in ownership it became The Pelican Inn. It sits behind the island’s highest dunes, shielded by live oaks, and came through Hurricane Hazel (1954) and Hugo (1989) when many island buildings did not.
