The story
Willcox’s was the center of Aiken’s Winter Colony, run by the Willcox family as an internationally known inn from 1898 to 1957. Frederick Sugden Willcox began in a cottage at Colleton Avenue and Chesterfield Street, linked around 1900 by a porte cochere and lobby to a new three-story building, and the last addition came in 1928. The Winter Colony district nomination notes the inn was known for its cuisine.
