The story
The lot at 78 Queen Street was part of a tract bought by planter Bernard Elliott soon after Charles Towne’s founding. Bookseller John O’Mara bought it in 1855 and, after the 1861 fire burned nearly a third of the city, built the present three-story single house from salvaged bricks around a central courtyard. Earthquake bolts from the 1886 quake are still visible on the facade. It opened as the Elliott House Inn in 1981, closed for renovation in 2009-2011 and was refreshed again in 2018.
