The story
The Stevens-Lathers House faces White Point Garden on the Battery. Colonel Richard Lathers transformed the house after 1870, and the inn says the Preservation Society of Charleston was founded in its drawing room. Dr. Jack L. Schaeffer bought the property in 2018 for $3.4 million and completed an 18-month restoration that uncovered original gold-leaf trim, frescoes and wallpaper, earning the Preservation Society’s Pro Merito Award. The mansion reopened as an 11-room inn alongside the long-running Battery Carriage House Inn.
The ghost story
Inn lore and local news describe two spirits in the Battery Carriage House: a polite "Gentleman Ghost" said to visit women guests in Room 10, and a headless torso in a rough wool coat reported at the foot of the bed in Room 8. Live 5 News called it the most haunted hotel in downtown Charleston.
