The story

The name recalls Charleston’s original Planters Inn of 1803, which advertised lodging for “country gentlemen and their families.” The present building at 112 North Market began as a mid-1800s emporium selling small luxuries, and the owner’s heirs placed a Historic Charleston Foundation easement on it in 1982. After Hurricane Hugo in 1989, a Charleston-born preservationist restored it as a boutique hotel; it is home to Peninsula Grill. A renovation of rooms, public spaces and Peninsula Grill was under way in 2026, with the hotel open.
