The story
The older of the two buildings opened in 1889 as Charleston’s YMCA, with an indoor pool on the ground floor and rooms members could rent upstairs. Next door, Civil War blockade runner John Rugheimer built a yellow-brick tailor shop in 1912. Both became apartments by the mid-20th century, were renovated together from 1992, and were combined in 2008 into the 45-room Fulton Lane Inn.
