The story
Col. J. Charles Blum hired Charleston architect Francis D. Lee to design a three-story commercial block on King Street, finished in 1853, with shops below and a tavern upstairs. After the Civil War the building housed a Singer sewing machine shop, a Salvation Army lodging for women, a dry cleaner and a skating rink. A 1983 renovation turned it into the Kings Courtyard Inn, opening two original light wells into courtyards, and it was a founding member of Historic Hotels of America.
