The story
Developer William Zeckendorf and Alcoa bought about 180 acres of the 20th Century Fox backlot in 1961, and Minoru Yamasaki, later architect of the World Trade Center, designed the curved hotel, which opened in 1966 as ‘The Hotel of the Future.’ It became a stage for presidents and celebrities, but it later faced plans for demolition in favor of high-rise condominiums. The city designated it a Historic-Cultural Monument in 2013, and Woodbridge Capital Partners led a large restoration before it reopened as a Fairmont.
