The story

Charles E. Perkins bought the Alisal ranch in 1927 and raised thoroughbreds there, including Kentucky Derby winner Flying Ebony. On the advice of Lynn Gilliam, the family converted the cattlemen’s quarters into guest rooms, and the Alisal opened as a summer dude ranch on July 16, 1946 with room for 30 guests. Rooms still have no televisions or telephones, and nightly rates include breakfast and dinner.
