The story
The Pacific Coast Borax Company built the Furnace Creek Inn in 1927 to give its struggling Death Valley Railroad a new business in tourism, hiring Los Angeles architect Albert C. Martin and landscape architect Daniel Hull. Spring-fed pools and palm gardens were part of the design. The resort’s golf course, 214 feet below sea level, has operated since the Depression era and was later redesigned by Perry Dye.
