The story
John Ghisolfo entered the hotel business when he bought the wood-frame European Hotel in 1912, then moved it to the back of the lot and built the reinforced-concrete Mount View Hotel in 1919. It stood across from the 1868 Calistoga railroad depot and within walking distance of the town’s hot-springs spas, advertising hot sulphur water and food from the hotel farm. Ghisolfo enlarged it in 1938 and ran it until he retired in 1964.
